– Test of English as a Foreign Language |
|
The Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test which measures
the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use
and understand English as it is used in college and
university settings. Scores on the test are accepted
by more than 5000 colleges and universities, professional
schools, licensing agencies and professional schools
in 90 countries. It is produced and administered by
the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Over time, ETS
has brought many changes in the test format considering
the changing requirements of the universities and the
students. Computer based TOEFL (CBT) was introduced
in 1998 in addition to the traditional Paper based TOEFL
(PBT). These two versions include the listening, structure,
reading, and writing sections.
These have been replaced by Internet Based TOEFL (IBT).
TOEFL (IBT) is an internet based test delivered in secure
testing centers around the world. It tests all the four
language skills that are important for effective communication:
listening, speaking, writing, and reading. It is more
comprehensive and integrated, and emphasizes the students’
ability to use English effectively in academic settings.
The new integrated tasks require the test takers to
combine more that one skill. The integrated tasks ask
test takers to:
read, listen, and then speak in
response to a question
listen and then speak in response to a question
read, listen, and then write in response to a question
There is no separate structure section. Grammar is now
tested as part of the other sections. It is important
to use good grammar in the speaking and the writing
sections.
This revised TOEFL test is available throughout UAE.
It is internationally accepted.
The old paper version is also available in UAE and is
accepted by most of the universities in UAE.
We continue to teach PBT to any student who requires
it for local universities, while also teaching IBT as
per the student’s university requirements.
